ABOUT THIS POLICY

MarginBoard is a business ledger for tracking income, expenses, receipts, invoices, tax estimates, and related business records, for use in the United States by adults. This policy explains, in plain language, what information the app handles, where it is stored, and the choices you have.

THE SHORT VERSION

MarginBoard is built to keep your business records on your device by default. You can optionally turn on private iCloud sync so your records and receipt attachments stay up to date across your Apple devices, and you can create your own password-encrypted backup files. There is no MarginBoard account and no MarginBoard server that stores your records—sync uses your own private Apple iCloud (CloudKit) space. Purchases are handled by Apple, so we never see your payment-card details. On the Free plan on iPhone and iPad, we show ads through Google AdMob; paid plans are ad-free.

INFORMATION STORED ON YOUR DEVICE

The business information you enter—income and expense entries, receipts, invoices, attachments, notes, categories, and tax-estimate inputs—is stored locally on your device. You can edit or delete these records at any time in the app, and removing MarginBoard from your device removes its local data.

OPTIONAL ICLOUD SYNC (PRIVATE CLOUDKIT)

MarginBoard offers optional sync so that eligible records and receipt attachments stay current across the Apple devices signed in to your Apple Account.

  • You choose whether to turn it on. Sync is off unless you enable it and are signed in to iCloud on your device. There is no separate MarginBoard account or login.
  • It uses your private iCloud space. Sync data is stored in your private Apple CloudKit database—not a public or shared database, and not a server operated by SparkCrest Digital. We do not receive a separate copy of your synced records. Apple processes and stores this data under Apple’s iCloud terms and privacy policy.
  • Availability depends on Apple. Sync requires that you are signed in to iCloud, that iCloud/CloudKit is available, and that you have sufficient iCloud storage. If iCloud is signed out, unavailable, or interrupted, sync may pause or fail; your records remain on your device.
  • Sync conflicts. If you edit the same record on more than one device before they sync, MarginBoard resolves the difference using its conflict-handling rules and keeps the most recent applicable change. In rare cases a conflicting edit may be superseded. For records you cannot afford to lose, we recommend creating a portable backup.
  • Turning it off. You can turn sync off in the app at any time. Turning it off stops future syncing; records already synced to your private iCloud remain there until removed as described under Deleting your data.

ENCRYPTED PORTABLE BACKUPS

You can create password-encrypted portable backup files of your records and attachments to store or move as you choose, for example to a computer or your own storage.

  • The backup is protected by a password you set. The password is not stored with the backup and is not transmitted to us. If you lose the password, the backup cannot be recovered—by you or by us. Please keep it somewhere safe.
  • You control where the backup goes. Once you export a backup, you are responsible for where it is stored and who can access it. A backup you place in another service, such as email, cloud storage, or a shared drive, becomes subject to that service’s terms and protections.

ITEMS THAT ARE NEVER SYNCED OR BACKED UP

To protect your security, the following are excluded from iCloud sync and from portable backups: app-lock passwords and PINs, authenticator secrets, and Apple purchase credentials. These remain on your device, or with Apple in the case of purchase credentials, and are not written into sync data or backup files.

PAYMENTS AND SUBSCRIPTIONS

MarginBoard offers Free, Basic, Pro, and Premium plans and a Premium Lifetime purchase through Apple In-App Purchase, processed by Apple using StoreKit. MarginBoard does not collect, receive, or store your payment-card number or billing details. Apple shares only limited information with the app, such as whether a purchase or renewal succeeded and which plan is active, so the app can unlock features and restore purchases. See Apple’s privacy policy for how Apple handles purchase information.

DIAGNOSTICS AND CRASH REPORTS

MarginBoard does not include an independent third-party analytics SDK.

  • Apple crash diagnostics. When you permit diagnostics sharing on your device, Apple may collect crash reports from distributed builds and make eligible reports available to us as the developer. This is handled through Apple’s standard diagnostics program and controlled by your device’s diagnostics setting under Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements. Apple’s terms govern this collection.
  • On-device performance metrics (MetricKit). MarginBoard uses Apple’s on-device MetricKit to gather performance and crash-diagnostic information. These reports are retained locally on your device and are not sent to us unless you choose to export them, for example to send to support.

ADVERTISING

Paid plans (Basic, Pro, Premium, and Premium Lifetime) do not show third-party ads.

  • Google AdMob on the Free iPhone/iPad tier. On the Free plan on iPhone and iPad, MarginBoard shows advertisements served by Google AdMob. To show ads, Google’s advertising systems may process information such as device and app identifiers, general (coarse) location inferred from network information, and ad-interaction data, in accordance with Google’s Privacy Policy and Google’s business and advertising terms. We do not sell or share your business records with advertisers, and your ledger content is not provided to Google for advertising.
  • App Tracking Transparency. When you first open MarginBoard, the app presents Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt asking whether to allow tracking. If you allow tracking, your device’s advertising identifier may be used to help show and measure ads, including across other apps and websites. If you ask the app not to track, MarginBoard does not use the advertising identifier to track you across other companies’ apps and websites. You can change this choice at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking. Your business records are never used for ad tracking.
  • Consent controls (Google UMP). In addition to the ATT prompt, where a separate privacy or consent choice applies to you, Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP) presents the applicable request and records your choice. You can review or change ad-related choices through the in-app privacy options where offered.
  • Mac version. On the Mac, MarginBoard does not use Google AdMob. Instead it may show a first-party SparkCrest Digital sponsor placement, which does not involve third-party ad targeting.

YOUR U.S. STATE PRIVACY RIGHTS

Depending on where you live, U.S. state privacy laws may give you rights over personal information we or our advertising partners process. Depending on your state, these rights may include the right to access the personal information held about you, to correct or delete it, to obtain a portable copy, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, of targeted (cross-context) advertising, and of certain profiling. Some states also let you designate an authorized agent and honor browser- or device-level universal opt-out signals.

Because MarginBoard keeps your business records on your device or in your own private iCloud space and does not operate a records server, most personal-information processing relevant to these rights arises from Google AdMob advertising on the Free iPhone/iPad tier. Showing personalized ads through AdMob may be considered a sale, sharing, or targeted advertising under some state laws. You can limit this by choosing Ask App Not to Track at the ATT prompt or later in Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking, by using the in-app privacy and consent options, or by upgrading to any paid ad-free plan.

To exercise a state privacy right, contact us at legal@sparkcrestdigital.com. We will respond as required by the law that applies to you and will not discriminate against you for exercising a right.

TAX ESTIMATES ARE NOT TAX ADVICE

MarginBoard can produce tax estimates to help you plan. These are planning estimates only. They are not tax, accounting, or legal advice and are not a substitute for guidance from a qualified professional. You are responsible for your own tax filings and for confirming amounts with a tax professional or the relevant tax authority.

CHILDREN

MarginBoard is a business record-keeping tool intended for adults. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

DELETING YOUR DATA

  • On your device: edit or delete records in the app, or remove MarginBoard from your device to delete its local data.
  • In iCloud: turn off sync to stop future syncing, and use the in-app Delete iCloud Data control to remove records stored in your private iCloud. You can also manage MarginBoard’s iCloud data in your device’s iCloud settings.
  • In backups: delete any portable backup files you created and no longer want, from wherever you stored them.
  • Advertising: to stop personalized advertising, choose Ask App Not to Track at the ATT prompt or in Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking, decline it in the in-app privacy options, or upgrade to a paid plan.

DATA SECURITY

We design MarginBoard to keep records on your device or in your own private iCloud space, to encrypt portable backups with your password, and to exclude sensitive credentials from sync and backups. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but keeping records local or in your private iCloud—rather than on a central server we operate—reduces exposure. Protect your device with a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, and current software.

SERVICE AVAILABILITY

Optional sync depends on Apple’s iCloud/CloudKit service, and advertising depends on Google’s systems. These are provided by third parties, may be interrupted or discontinued, and are offered without a guarantee of availability. An interruption to iCloud or the ad service does not affect the records stored locally on your device.

CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make a material change, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, provide notice in the app or on our website. Continued use of MarginBoard after an update means you accept the revised policy.
